Do You Have Dirty Ducts?

Your air ducts deserve some love! Without efficient ductwork, your furniture would be covered in a thick layer of dust and you’d have some really terrible allergies due to poor indoor air quality.

So, are your air ducts dirty? Not sure? Take a look around your home for one or more of these five warning signs. If you notice any problems, it’s time to inspect your air ducts to see if they need professional cleaning:

  1. Dust: If you clean your home one day and find it dusty again the next day (and you’re 100 percent positive you don’t need to change your furnace filter), your ducts may be coated with dirt and dust. As air circulates through your ducts, it pushes the debris out into your home. The dirty air settles and dust collects on every surface of your home.
  2. Debris: If you notice bits of cobwebs, dust or other things blowing out of your registers when the furnace or AC kicks on, your ducts may need professional cleaning.
  3. An increase in utility bills: A sudden increase in your energy bill is a pretty good sign that there’s some inefficiency going on in your HVAC system that could be caused by dirt and debris buildup.
  4. Infestation: If you hear critters scurrying around behind the walls or ceiling of your home, you probably have a rodent problem. Mice are particularly fond of making their homes inside air duct systems, so call a qualified professional to help you take care of the issue.
  5. Pet hair: Pet owners are generally at a higher risk for dirty ducts because their pets produce more hair and dander than pet-free homes. Take a quick look at your registers. If you notice large buildups of dust and pet hair right inside the register, it may be time for a cleaning.
