Winter Is a Moisture Sucker
2/11/2014
Winter is a moisture sucker. It manages to dry out just about everything. Hair, skin, eyes and even nasal passages are all affected by low humidity. Dry air can also damage your home, causing excessive dust, cracks in wood floors and furniture and damage to electronic equipment. Put an end to the dryness and embrace humidity this season!
Here are a few easy ways you can fix low humidity levels in your home:
- Measure your home’s humidity. To measure the humidity level, try purchasing a hygrometer, which costs around $20 and is sold in most drug and grocery stores. For optimum comfort, your home’s humidity level should be around 45 percent during the winter months. This can vary depending on climate.
- Purchase a humidifier. If the humidity level in your home is below 30 percent, it’s a good idea to purchase for your home. The best option is a whole-home humidifier. It has all of the benefits with none of the effort of changing water daily.
- Hang your clothes to dry. Every little bit of moisture will help your home, even if it’s coming from damp clothes! As they dry, the moisture will be released into the air. Bonus: Air-drying your clothes lowers your electric bill since you won’t need to run the dryer!
- Add some houseplants. Plants release moisture through transpiration (a fancy way of saying water vapor comes out of their leaves), so they’re a great, natural way to add a little humidity. Plus they add to the look and feel of your home!
Be careful with how much humidity you add to your home. You want a pleasant haven, not a tropical jungle. High humidity levels can actually have negative effects on your home health, too. If you notice fogging or condensation on your windows, your home is probably too humid. In the summer months, when humidity levels are higher, you should consider having a dehumidifier in your basement to prevent mold and mildew growth.
